The River Misbourne is a winterbourne, a chalk stream that only flows in winter. This year it started to flow at the end of February. You can see it at Boug’s Meadow (adjacent to the Link Road car park) and at Abbey Park.

Lots to enjoy on our lovely Christmassy high street...

We were so lucky with the weather last Saturday. The rain cleared to a clear, crisp night and the Festival was a great success with many families visiting well into the evening. A very big thank you to Anne Hewett. Without her the event would not have happened. And to Coopers Markets who pulled out the stops with stalls all the way down the High Street. There was a sprinkling of funfair magic with the twirling teacups and a high trampoline and the magnificent stilt walkers were here again, a source of wonder to children and adults alike.

Great Missenden Christmas trees are up!

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS…

It was hard work- but the Christmas trees are up!

A dedicated team of volunteers met up at the Cross Keys on Saturday morning then continued working again on Sunday to install the 55 Christmas trees we look forward to seeing on the High Street each year.

Once the trees were decorated with lights, the team then took to their ladders to put the trees in place and plug them in.

So the High St is now looking very twinkly and festive. A big thank you to everyone who turned out to help brighten our Christmas!

Lighthouse starts on Monday, 28th July

Lighthouse returns to Buryfields from Monday, 28th July so the village will be buzzing with young people. There will be a security fence around the tented village so the walking path around the field shouldn't be affected. The cafe there would love to receive donations of cakes so, if you fancy baking, drop your offering off at the entrance tent any time during the week...

Bucks New University has announced plans to sell Missenden Abbey

A statement from Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) who currently own the site has been released:

The governing body of Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) has taken the difficult decision to approve the proposed sale of the Missenden Abbey site in response to the ongoing financial pressures faced by all universities.

BNU is not alone in having to make tough choices in light of these significant challenges, and our strategic focus is on providing the best possible student experience; generating research that positively impacts our communities; and developing the talent within our organisation.

Despite the best efforts of everyone at both Missenden Abbey and the University, we are unable to retain and manage the site without significant investment that we are sadly unable to afford. As such, we are planning to close our doors for the last time on Sunday 30 November 2025 .

Marketing for the potential sale of the site has begun and the University is open to selling the Abbey as a going concern.

The continued smooth running of the Abbey remains a key priority for BNU and the team working at the Abbey, so until any potential sale, it’s ‘business as usual’ at Missenden Abbey until the end of November. We have written to everyone who has booked a room or event at the venue both prior to and after 30 November.

Local campaigners' success with HS2 'green bridge'

Leather Lane Conservation Group secure plans for South Heath 'green bridge'

Thank you and congratulations to this small but exhaustive local group of campaigners; Leather Lane Conservation Group who have managed to secure a plan for a 'green bridge' over the railway between the South Heath portal and the Wendover viaduct.

In the original HS2 plan, 100 trees, mainly oaks, were to be felled. These were oaks planted by Arthur Lazenby, the founder of the famous Liberty department store in the late 1800s. Thanks to their efforts, a total of only 16 oak trees will be lost.
A green bridge (or short tunnel) over the railway will be constructed. It will be 25m wide with planting on the bridge to provide flight lines for bats and connectivity for all wildlife. This is the only green bridge in the Chilterns National Landscape and the only wildlife friendly crossing between the South Heath portal and the Wendover viaduct. It represents a vast improvement on the Hybrid Bill.
The campaigners have recently registered as a charity and are looking to establish a conservation area, particularly for bats, encompassing the new and old lanes, and the remaining trees, to ensure that the wildlife crossing continues to function effectively.

Have you seen the new mural at Great Missenden station? It was officially opened last Friday by the artist, Solveig Eva Magnusdottir and students from The Misbourne School who worked with her on the ideas. They also learned how to manage the project working with The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. It was funded by the Chiltern Railways Community Investment Fund. Go and take a look, it's worth the trip!

Boug's Meadow volunteers fundraising for new picnic table

A message from the Boug's Meadow volunteers:

Our picnic table and bench have served visitors for many years.

A kind donor enabled us to install a new bench in May and we now need to replace the collapsing table. We need £1,500 for a table in the same rustic style from the same craftsman.

May we ask you to consider contributing?

The rustic oak picnic bench and table at Boug’s Meadow have been well used by the local community and many visitors over nearly two decades, surviving the elements, putting up with minor vandalism and now succumbing to the inevitable onslaught of the years. In May, volunteers dismantled the old bench and craftsman Ian Varley ( https://rusticcarpentry.co.uk ) installed a new bench in a modern rustic style. This has been well received by visitors, much admired on National Meadows Day and we are very thankful to the Great Missenden resident who enabled this to happen with a kind and generous donation.

We now need to replace the ageing and slanting oak picnic table to match the new bench. We estimate the total cost to be close to £1,500 and have started a donation page at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/bougs-meadow-table . We would be grateful if Prestwood Nature members would consider contributing. We would also be grateful if you would pass this request on to others who you may feel would want to help the community in this way. Thank you.

By the way, as much oak as possible from the old furniture is being kept for recycling as additional small benches for Prestwood Nature sites or elsewhere in the community.

Extension and new timetable for bus route 41

Extension and new timetable for Carousel bus route 41 (from 27th August)

The 41 bus service to High Wycombe has become a lot more reliable since Carousel took it over in January this year. Now the route is to be extended to Old Amersham and A mersham station.

The new timetable starts on 27 August, 2023. Regular users please note that the bus to Wycombe will now leave at 45 minutes past the hour. (Timetable and route map attached.)

Do try it out. The fare cap has been extended to the end of October so you can travel for £2. And here's another tip which takes the anguish out of bus travel. Take a photo/scan of the QR code at the bus stop which will take you to:

Select your bus stop and it will tell you when the next bus is due. You could even try it out now at home!

We understand the extension is partly due to feedback from Prestwood Village Association so please use the bus so that the service keeps on improving.

New parking tariffs at Great Missenden station!

RingGo app now available with more tariff options

There has been a very welcome change to the parking tariffs in the station car park. The RingGo app is now being used and location 2614 (Great Missenden Station Car Park) has some new tariffs:

Great Missenden Shopper Short Stay (3 hours) 10am - 6pm £2.00

This is all week, including weekends.

It's also £1 for evening parking 6pm to 2.30am

This is a trial and the board at the station will be updated if it's a success so please make use of these new tariffs and let your visitors and customers know.

Thank you for coming to the fete

Thank you to everyone who helped make the village fete on Saturday 4 June such a success. Thank you to everyone who came. Thank you to all the beautifully behaved dogs. Thank you to our MP Sarah Green who opened the fete and stayed for three hours. The sun shone and everyone had a good time. Thank you every one.

Thames Valley Police have frequently repeated that their success in fighting crime is very dependent on the efficient gathering of relevant information – ‘criminal intelligence’ – from the public. So, we all have a personal stake in helping this process.

The Neighbourhood Watch national website - ourwatch.org.uk – offers ideas of what to look out for under various crime headings. Even those living in peaceful, low-crime areas may occasionally overhear or see something that is suspicious or ‘doesn’t look right.’ Putting together criminal intelligence has been described as a bit like a jigsaw, and even little bits of information can help – by confirming other pieces perhaps. So, it is important that we all report things that we feel could help the police.

I am sure you know that you should immediately call 999 if you see a crime being committed or in an emergency. And you should call 101 to report anything else to the police – or go online to do so . This, of course, involves you in providing your own contact details, and even though these will be treated in complete confidence by the police, sometimes we can be reluctant to ‘get involved’ to that extent. That is understandable, but we do not want your ‘piece of the jigsaw’ to be missed. It could be vital!
